Artistcellar: Art Is Not Optional-!!

Hello Creatives...

Sarinda here on Hump Day, again. I was delighted that Artistcellar.com asked me back to do a guest blog post. How Sweet it is.

Today I am using liquid watercolor from Dr. PH Martin's Watercolors.  I love these intense inky colors. This project is vibrant and fun.

Here is what you will need:

• Artistcellar Stencils
• Watercolor paper
• Watercolor Dr. PH Martin's
• Spray bottle for water
• White Gesso
• Black Gesso
• Sponge Brushes
• Heat tool
• Paper Trimmer
• Adhesive letters
• Pitt Pens
• Scissors
• Scrap Paper
• Octopode Factory Stamps
• Copic Markers
• Corner Punch

Step 1:
Spray watercolor paper with water. Start adding the watercolor from ink dropper right onto the page. I have my watercolor pad vertical with an easel so that I get the best drips and bleeding. The next few images are the stages of adding color. Rotating the paper for the best blurring of the watercolor.

 There are a few stages that seem to have a very ugly phase to it all. Keep with it and add more water and keep turning the paper.

When you get where you like it dry with heat tool.

Step 2:
Cut out the section that you like the best for your journal.

Step 3:
Lay stencil over watercolor. Take the gesso and sponge brush with a bit of water brush over the page.

 This is how my page turned out. I like how the gesso picks up some of the watercolor.

Step 3:
Do the same with the black gesso. Yet use sparingly in comparison to the white.

Step 4:
Cut the page into strips and corner punch each one. Then edge with sponge brush and black gesso. You can see how the black gesso picks up the texture of the watercolor paper.

Step 5:
Add to you journal with adhesive tape.

Step 6:
Write out with the letters "Art IS Not Optional" and stick them on neutral scrap paper and line with Pitt Pens. Cut out with scissors and adhere to journal page.

Step 7:
Color the Octopode Factory Stamp with Copic markers and fussy cut out. Adhere to the end of the word "optional".


I totally agree with Artistcellar.com slogan. For me this is how I live my life.

Watercolor Tutorial and Artistcellar.com Stencils

Hello Creatives.....

Sarinda here as your mid week muse with a watercolor, ink and Pan Pastels tutorial. This color palette is one that I was working on in New York a few weeks ago and wanted to see how it looks in this medium. Then I will move onto incorporating it in a glass sculpture. Let me know if you like it?!

Here is what you will need:

• Artiscellar Playful Pods Stencils
• Koi Watercolor
• Water basin
• Watercolor brush (I used a filbert 8)
• Pitt Pen Set
• Rag
• Watercolor paper (I used Hot Pressed)
• Pan Pastels
• Cosmetic Sponge
• Frame 
• Scissors

Step 1:
I most always choose to do a color palette blending test first. So I used a sheet of watercolor paper that I knew that I would be working on and added two pure colors on the left of the page and the mixed 50% of each color on the right.

Here is the test that I did. You can do this with any colors you wish. Keep in mind warm colors play nice with warm colors and cool colors play nice with cool colors. Otherwise you might get an icky brown... Well I guess I could a good color too. :D

 Step 2:
Using the yellow/green and some light brown I made marks like a school of fish on the lower half of page.

 Step 3:
Here you can see that I added some sweeping reed like plants. Starting with the yellow/green, orange, light brown, medium brown and then black/brown. Don't think about it too much just make some marks.

 Step 4:
Adding some defining line work over the top of the dried watercolor to give some definition.

 Step 5:
As you probbly know by now that I love the Playful Pods stencils a whole darn lot. lol. I wanted to add some Pan Pastels to the top layer in the lower left corner of thew work.

 Step 6:
Cut down the image to fit your mat and frame. I always work a bit larger to help with the composition of the frame. Sign mat and frame your art.

Here is a detail of the work. I love the flowing look of the watercolors and the colors. It reminds me of a warm summer day listening to the reed grasses sing in the wind.

Gelli and Artistcellar.com Part 3

I have been traveling teaching at Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY as well as a few days in NYC. What wonderful inspirations I have enjoyed walking through the art museums.

What you can make with these beautiful papers? I think the key is not to think that these are too precious to use. They are fun to make and you can make more in minutes….. Well- if you are me, I can go all afternoon. lol.

Now that you have all these fabulous monoprinted papers. WHAT will you ever do with them?
Here is just a few ideas.

• stationary
• ATC’s
• gift wrapping

Today I have Magnets that I made with glass blobs and clear drying glue such as Glossy Accents or Diamond Glaze. Magnets are hot glued onto the back of the glass.

Gelli & Artistcellar Stencils

Hello Creatives....

I have a 3 day tutorial for you that will come to you on Hump Day for the next 3 weeks. I will be making Gelli Prints on Day 1 (today). Day 2 & 3 will be projects that you can make with the prints.

I love using my Gelli Monoprinting Plate quite a bit. Yet, sometimes I will get on a roll and I love it so much I don't use these amazing papers. I am not sure why? They are simple to make. And More reason to play with it. Anyway, enough of that glimpse into my art life. I would like to use these beautiful papers and I started asking what would I use these papers on? What would you use these papers on?

So let's get started...
You will see a lot of images of what I did and how. The best results for my taste was the ghost images or second or third printings. That is just me and my aesthetic. Do whatever makes you giggle and have fun.

Here is what you will need:

• Artistcellar stencils (I used Old World Maps Series )
• Gelli Plate
• Brayer
• Acrylic Paints
• Ink Sprays 
• Water
• Towel for cleaning
• White Copy Paper...... I also want to try Deli Papers.

 Step 1:
Add acrylic paint to the Gelli I used a grey leaving some open spaces to add in ink sprays. I really like using the mix of both ink and paint.

Step 2:
Lay your stencil on top of the paint. Place paper on top and use your fingers or brayer to get the paint on to the paper. Here is the result of the first print.

Step 3:
Ghost prints.... So many ways to do this. This is the sequence that I did. By no means is this law. Do what feels good to you. I took off the stencil and laid the paper right on top of the Gelli.

Step 4:
Ghost print again.... just a finer version. I quite like the way this one looks. It has a lot of potential to add more ink, line work, doodles.

Step 5:

Clean up. Rather that waste all that goodness of ink and paint. I added water to the surface a bit of ink splatters. Then pressed the paper right into the puddles.  WOW... Ok this is my favorite one... Silly I know. All those steps to get this. ;) I just like the way the sparkle from the spray inks formed. 

Be sure to rise all your tools, stencils and Gelli Plate with water and dry.

Hello Lovelies....

As much as I love mixed media I also love to create scrapbook pages. This is a fun non-threatening, playing with color, treat for me.

Here is a quick tutorial on how to use spray inks and your Artistcellar stencils in a fun way.

Here is what you will need:

• Artistcellar Flower of Life and TEXTures 2 Stencils
• White Card Stock
• Tag
• Dylusions Ink Sprays
• Pitt Pens
• Pencil
• Ruler
• Paper trimmer
• Scrapbooking kit  (I am using Basic Grey Bow Ties)
• Adhesive

Step 1:
Get some color on that white card stock..... I sprayed through the stencil and then flipped it over to get a reversed image. I love how the two colors blend in the center. Do the same with the tag.

 Step 2:
I love the all in one bundles that you can buy at stores. They have everything that you could want in one shot. This is where I start to stage out the image and the items from the bundle that I know I want to use.

Step 3:
Add more to the spaces. I like using 3's in my work, whatever I create will have a variation of three. I like doing this so that my eye will move around the page and look at every detail. I do not start to adhere the bits until I am sure where they will permanently live on the page.

You can see in the above image that I outlined a rectangle for the journaling spot. It is good to see this as you are laying out the bits.

Step 4:
Enjoy your family photos with a whole lot of color.
